While most rescue Dachshunds at these homes have been neglected or abused, several have been placed there by owners who find it difficult to look after the dog for a variety of reasons. The dogs are usually around 4 to 7 years old, and spayed or neutered on admission into the rescue home, if they weren’t previously.
Rescue homes can be found via the Internet and once you have found a conveniently located one, you can apply to be an adoptive parent. This involves providing information about your living circumstances, your beliefs about dog rearing and discipline, and some references. Most rescues charge a fee of between $200 and $300 to cover expenses of bringing a neglected dog back to a healthy condition.
Rescue Dachshunds need to be treated with care and patience, and will take time to adjust to a new environment. Quite often, such dogs are traumatized and will not immediately socialize with humans and other pets. Rescue home tend to prefer older adoptive parents who have the time and patience to nurture a rescue dog. Rescue dogs are also not always in the best health and may need extra grooming and medical attention.
While a rescue dog isn’t always a cheaper proposition, by taking one home you’re saving a life. The grateful dog will in turn shower you with love and loyalty, soon becoming an indispensable part of the family.
Like all volunteer organizations, most dog rescues are always looking for financial and other help. Several need ‘foster moms’ to help nurse an abused dog and get him ready for adoption, and they also welcome volunteers. If you have relevant skills, offer to help, or at least take a dog home. You’ll find a rescue Dachshund has as much to offer you as any other.
